Ben Bennett, 77, of Junction City, KS, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at his home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church. Pastor Dirk Weiss will officiate. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the church. Cremation will follow the funeral service. Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to the First United Methodist Church 804 N. Jefferson Street Junction City, KS 66441 or to the organization of the donor's choice.

Ben was born July 29, 1942, in Garden City, KS, the son of Boyd and Rosilene (McLeish) Bennett.

Ben moved to Wichita, KS with his family when he was five years old. He graduated from Wichita North High School with the class of 1960. He later graduated from Friends University in Wichita where he played football. Upon graduating from Friends, he moved to Junction City, KS where he had accepted a position as a high school government teacher and head wrestling coach. He also was an assistant football coach under the leadership of Al Simpler. During his tenure at Junction City High School from 1965 until 1982, he guided the Blue Jay wrestling teams to three state championships and 27 individual wrestlers to state titles. He later worked extensively with USA Wrestling where he served on the board of directors, as executive director, and as a manager of the wrestling venue for the 1984 Olympics. Ben was named Kansas Wrestling Coach of the Year three times and was a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was one of the original founders of the Kansas Kids' Wrestling Federation.

In 2006, Ben was elected to the Geary County Commission. He represented the 1st District of western Geary County on the commission and was serving his fourth term of the governing body. Ben was Past Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #1037, a member of First United Methodist Church, Junction City Noon Rotary, Booster Club, Junction City Rodeo Association, Military Affairs Council, AUSA, Bourbon Club, and many organizations and boards under his leadership as a county commissioner.

He married Peggy Huey on December 28, 1966 in Junction City, KS at the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Peggy; two brothers, DeWayne Bennett (Rose) of North Wilkesboro, NC and Everrett Bennett (Grace) of Riverside, CA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Buck and Phyllis Gibson of Junction City, KS; one uncle and aunt, Dale and Marge King of Wylie, TX and one aunt, Phyllis Haynes of Abilene, KS; three nephews and four nieces, many great nephews, nieces and cousins as well as his four legged friends, Ralphie, Ebby and Hazer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father and mother-in-law, Vince and Jeane Huey.

I had Mr. Bennett during my senior year 1979-1980 for History and advanced constitution class. At first his gruff exterior scared me, but it only took a couple of classes to realize the softie he was inside. He took his job as teacher seriously, so as long as you did your assignments and studied for your tests, he was cool with it. But it went deeper than that. He really wanted you to LEARN, and you could tell he loved teaching. He made a big impression on this german girl who had just emigrated to the USA a couple of years previously. I thought of him throughout my life and just now found out he had passed. I am really sorry and feel quite sad, but I am sure his wife and family feel his loss more deeply than I could. Being married for decades to my one and only, I don't want to have to contemplate such a loss. My heart goes out to his family and I hope they realize what an impression he made, not just on me but also on countless students throughout the years.

I met Ben at the second state tournament I officiated around 40 years ago at Junction City High School. We became instant friends and had a lot of good laughs together. When he retired from coaching and starting officiating I use to ride with him to a few of the dinners after the matches were over and always had good talks about not only wrestling but life in general. I always was glad to see Ben come into the officials dressing room in-between rounds at the state meet. This summer I was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame and I was thrilled that Ben was there. I only got to talk with him for a few minutes but it really made my night to see him again. I found out about Ben's passing the day of his funeral while attending a wrestling tournament in Overland Park. I guess that was proper setting to honor his life.

Jon and I have so many memories of Ben it is hard to decide what to tell. Of course, there are all the memories of times spent at JCHS back in the 60's and then the many times he came to the reunions held for the Class of 1966. He always added to the festivities. The best memory I have of Ben is when he made a special time for my Dad, Norman White, at his birthday parties by escorting him to the Country Club and the Opera House in the horse drawn carriage. Dad remembered that so fondly in the years that followed and it was always a special memory for him and for our family. We now live in San Benito, Texas, so will be unable to attend the services, but we wanted to express our sympathies to Peggy and the family!

Dear Peggy,
I am thankful for you and Coach Bennett. I have great memories around times at your home/ranch. To see love and care lived out through you and Ben. They were memories I put in my database for how marriage should look.
Mr. Bennett was the major male role model in my life (outside of uncles/granddads). He was tough as a coach to bring out the best in us. That best was on and off the mat. He required the best from us in school, in our families, and on the mat.
My life has been successful because of the influence Coach Bennett had on me. I still use one of his sayings today. Their isn't a cowboy that cant be thrown and their isn't a horse that cant be rode. His stories were enjoyable but had a point to them.
Coach may be gone from this earth but his influence will go on until the Lord returns. His investment into so many people's lives. Diana and I have seven sons five who are adopted. Ben is influencing them indirectly. So, I can say with confidence that He will influence many more generations.
Our Heavenly Father we draw on the promises you give us that You will never leave or forsake us. I ask that your comfort will engulf Peggy, Buck, and Phyllis during this hard time of saying see you later. May you give them strength when they needed it. Amen

I had Mr. Bennett for government in high school, I later covered his wrestling teams while working for KJCK and then I had the privilege of working with him at the radio stations. Ben, gave me 1st job out of college (Ole Miss) in 1985. I got the pleasure to work for him for 2 years with the Junction City Recreation Department. Honestly, I was scared of Big Ben, for about (1) minute - then he gave me the best "Bear Hug" and welcomed me to JC. Ben, was truly a "gentle giant" and a "teddy bear". Ben was deeply passionate about kids and the citizens of Junction City. He asked me to create a well rounded sports/recreation program for Junction City. I still have my "time sheets" for 1985 and 1986, I averaged about 70 hours per week. And even volunteered for other programs involving youth sports in the area. I did not want to disappoint Ben, and could never say "no" to him. Having said that, it was the best job I have ever had, because Ben was the best boss/mentor I have ever had.

At age 21, I was many miles/states away from my home in Mississippi, missing my parents, siblings and my friends. I was homesick for a few weeks. Ben and Peggy changed that, they treated me like their son, and really took great care of me. I considered them my 2nd parents. I am so happy and fortunate that my son got to meet Ben and Peggy a couple of years ago, when we came to JC and stayed at their house.

I am a much better person for getting to know and work for Ben. I am so lucky and appreciative for "god" putting Ben and Peggy in my life. I will miss you Ben, but I will never ever forget how well you treated me, and taught me about passion for a community that you live in, no matter what community you live in, you do everything you can to make it better.

Dear Mrs. Bennett - Like everyone, I am sadden to hear about Coach Bennett. I have many, many great memories of Coach Bennett as my teacher and wrestling coach. He was a tough disciplinarian, but was always there for his "wrestlers" no matter the situation. One memory I have is your wedding. Coach invited all of his wrestlers to the wedding and before we went Coach made it very clear that we were to be on our best behavior, or else. To this day, none of us were as "good" as we were at your wedding. Coach did not specifically define what "or else" meant, but none of us wanted to find out. We were all "angels". As everyone knows he had a way to get his point across. That is one of many memories I have during the years of wrestling for Coach Bennett. All great memories. About once a year I would call Coach to say hello and see how you and he were doing. I would usually catch him at the coffee shop or home and no matter where he was, or what he was doing he would take time to talk. His first question was always, how are you doing? On occasion when I was in town we would meet and catch up. My most recent in-person visit was when he was in the hospital after getting kicked by a horse. You were in the hospital room and we all had a good visit. Ah, I have great memories of Coach Bennett and I know others do as well. God bless you Mrs. Bennett and Coach.

I had the privilege of being part of your husband's first wrestling team at JCHS. At the reunion he apologized to me for not being as good of a coach that first year, as he should have been. His subsequent success down thru the years told me that he took lessons learned and put them into action. It took 50 years, but your husband's

Peggy, i am so so sorry, i am at a loss for words, so sad. Just six weeks ago Ben, myself and eight others went on our bi-annual fishing trip to Lake Texoma. I am so glad that we all got to go this time, Ben seemed so happy and full of life. Makes you realize just how fragile life can be. Go rest high on that mountain Ben.
