I had Mr. Bennett during my senior year 1979-1980 for History and advanced constitution class. At first his gruff exterior scared me, but it only took a couple of classes to realize the softie he was inside. He took his job as teacher seriously, so as long as you did your assignments and studied for your tests, he was cool with it. But it went deeper than that. He really wanted you to LEARN, and you could tell he loved teaching. He made a big impression on this german girl who had just emigrated to the USA a couple of years previously. I thought of him throughout my life and just now found out he had passed. I am really sorry and feel quite sad, but I am sure his wife and family feel his loss more deeply than I could. Being married for decades to my one and only, I don't want to have to contemplate such a loss. My heart goes out to his family and I hope they realize what an impression he made, not just on me but also on countless students throughout the years.

With much appreciation,

Peggy, I just heard today from Gary that Ben had passed away. My deepest sympathy. I remember the first time I met Ben at a coffee shop in Junction City after working the night shift at Irwin Army Medical Center. It was before Gary & I were married. Ben really did a lot for Gary and they both had so much in common. I hope you get this message and that maybe I will hear from you. I retired from the Army 5 years ago and live in San Antonio. Mr. Bennett was my history teacher at JCHS in the early 1970s. He was a great educator and coach. He always was a wonderful larger-than-life presence at JCHS. He and others during those years really helped shape young lives.

Ben.... uncle Ben as I knew him was a great guy. When I was young, used to go out with my grandpa and tend to horses at the barn at Ben's place. Seems ages ago. I'll never forget the hunting trips. He was a great friend to my grandpa. Im sure they are playing pitch and drinking good whiskey up in the sky. RIP Ben..

I met Ben at the second state tournament I officiated around 40 years ago at Junction City High School. We became instant friends and had a lot of good laughs together. When he retired from coaching and starting officiating I use to ride with him to a few of the dinners after the matches were over and always had good talks about not only wrestling but life in general. I always was glad to see Ben come into the officials dressing room in-between rounds at the state meet. This summer I was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame and I was thrilled that Ben was there. I only got to talk with him for a few minutes but it really made my night to see him again. I found out about Ben's passing the day of his funeral while attending a wrestling tournament in Overland Park. I guess that was proper setting to honor his life.

I was lucky to know Ben's sweet mother in law, and quickly learned how important family was to this wonderful family.
I felt special to be considered a friend of their family.
Memories will always be cherished. Hugs to Peggy and all his love ones.

Jon and I have so many memories of Ben it is hard to decide what to tell. Of course, there are all the memories of times spent at JCHS back in the 60's and then the many times he came to the reunions held for the Class of 1966. He always added to the festivities. The best memory I have of Ben is when he made a special time for my Dad, Norman White, at his birthday parties by escorting him to the Country Club and the Opera House in the horse drawn carriage. Dad remembered that so fondly in the years that followed and it was always a special memory for him and for our family. We now live in San Benito, Texas, so will be unable to attend the services, but we wanted to express our sympathies to Peggy and the family!

Dear Peg, Phyllis and Buck,

I am so grateful and blessed to have been able to visit with Ben and Peg, whom I consider my surrogate father and mother, in late October for the past three years. While I was growing up, Coach Bennett was more than just my wrestling coach, football coach, and government teacher; he was the epitome of the man I was trying to become.

~ Richard Felton - December 20, 2019

Ben was one of the first faces I met in the Flint Hills and his memory is forever linked with my memories there. He welcomed me and my family from the start and helped us to really appreciate all that the Flint Hills region is and what it meant for the Regional Council to come together. His impact extends well beyond Geary County — he leaves as a legacy a region that works together and takes care of each other, and to watch him embrace that role was such an encouragement to many.

I'm grateful to have known Ben. Peggy, you are in my prayers.

Grace & Peace,

Peggy,
I just got the word, and so sorry to hear of coach Bennett, he will truly be missed. Coach was a big part, of a lot of peoples lives, mine included, and mentored many of us. He wasn't only concerned with what we did on the mat, but also what we did in life, and was always there to give good advice, and help with the rough spots in life, and I'm glad I got to thank him the last time I saw him. God bless you, Phyllis, Buck and the entire family.

So sorry to hear about Coach Bennett. My husband, Irving, and I had him in 67-68 for government. Ben was always my favorite teacher. I will never forget our long conversation at the fly-in 2 years ago. He was a great man and will be missed by many. Prayers for Peggy and all the family.

~ Kathy (Orth) Velez - December 19, 2019

Dear Peggy,
I am thankful for you and Coach Bennett. I have great memories around times at your home/ranch. To see love and care lived out through you and Ben. They were memories I put in my database for how marriage should look.
Mr. Bennett was the major male role model in my life (outside of uncles/granddads). He was tough as a coach to bring out the best in us. That best was on and off the mat. He required the best from us in school, in our families, and on the mat.
My life has been successful because of the influence Coach Bennett had on me. I still use one of his sayings today. Their isn't a cowboy that cant be thrown and their isn't a horse that cant be rode. His stories were enjoyable but had a point to them.
Coach may be gone from this earth but his influence will go on until the Lord returns. His investment into so many people's lives. Diana and I have seven sons five who are adopted. Ben is influencing them indirectly. So, I can say with confidence that He will influence many more generations.
Our Heavenly Father we draw on the promises you give us that You will never leave or forsake us. I ask that your comfort will engulf Peggy, Buck, and Phyllis during this hard time of saying see you later. May you give them strength when they needed it. Amen

He will be greatly missed and to his family, may he rest in peace!

Ben, gave me 1st job out of college (Ole Miss) in 1985. I got the pleasure to work for him for 2 years with the Junction City Recreation Department. Honestly, I was scared of Big Ben, for about (1) minute - then he gave me the best "Bear Hug" and welcomed me to JC. Ben, was truly a "gentle giant" and a "teddy bear". Ben was deeply passionate about kids and the citizens of Junction City. He asked me to create a well rounded sports/recreation program for Junction City. I still have my "time sheets" for 1985 and 1986, I averaged about 70 hours per week. And even volunteered for other programs involving youth sports in the area. I did not want to disappoint Ben, and could never say "no" to him. Having said that, it was the best job I have ever had, because Ben was the best boss/mentor I have ever had.

At age 21, I was many miles/states away from my home in Mississippi, missing my parents, siblings and my friends. I was homesick for a few weeks. Ben and Peggy changed that, they treated me like their son, and really took great care of me. I considered them my 2nd parents. I am so happy and fortunate that my son got to meet Ben and Peggy a couple of years ago, when we came to JC and stayed at their house.

I am a much better person for getting to know and work for Ben. I am so lucky and appreciative for "god" putting Ben and Peggy in my life. I will miss you Ben, but I will never ever forget how well you treated me, and taught me about passion for a community that you live in, no matter what community you live in, you do everything you can to make it better.

~ Trent Emmons - December 16, 2019

With heavy heart I received the news that Ben had passed away. When I was back in JC over the summer, I got to visit with Ben. What a pleasure it was sharing memories of he and our daughter. Ben being the horse lover he was, began Danielle's love and adventures of the horse world. Our family will never forget his kindness.

Coach Bennett was my Govt teacher from 1969-1970. He taught me and my classmates the 3 principles which Communists attack to Divide & Conquer every nation, especially America. They are:

God
Family
Country (Patriotism)

I never forgot his love for country and his desire to warn his students of how our Great Republic needs to be guarded against this enemy to our freedom. Rest In Peace coach Bennett. You did good!

The Class of 1966 became a better group of individuals, men and women, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers due to the nuggets that Ben the Teacher, Ben the Coach and above all Ben the person God Blessed that gave "us" all Hope, Insight, Tenacity, Respect for Others and an example of how to conduct yourself in and out of the classroom.
Always a Shining Light to All. Peggy "we" have lost a Champion for God's work here on earth but "we" know there was a bigger job opening that God needed Ben for. Hallelujah, "We" Celebrate the Life of Ben Bennett!

Dear Mrs. Bennett - Like everyone, I am sadden to hear about Coach Bennett. I have many, many great memories of Coach Bennett as my teacher and wrestling coach. He was a tough disciplinarian, but was always there for his "wrestlers" no matter the situation. One memory I have is your wedding. Coach invited all of his wrestlers to the wedding and before we went Coach made it very clear that we were to be on our best behavior, or else. To this day, none of us were as "good" as we were at your wedding. Coach did not specifically define what "or else" meant, but none of us wanted to find out. We were all "angels". As everyone knows he had a way to get his point across. That is one of many memories I have during the years of wrestling for Coach Bennett. All great memories. About once a year I would call Coach to say hello and see how you and he were doing. I would usually catch him at the coffee shop or home and no matter where he was, or what he was doing he would take time to talk. His first question was always, how are you doing? On occasion when I was in town we would meet and catch up. My most recent in-person visit was when he was in the hospital after getting kicked by a horse. You were in the hospital room and we all had a good visit. Ah, I have great memories of Coach Bennett and I know others do as well. God bless you Mrs. Bennett and Coach.

Best Coach and Teacher I ever had and Mentor. The values I live today many instilled in me by Coach Bennet

~ John Powers - December 15, 2019

Dear Peggy,

I had the privilege of being part of your husband's first wrestling team at JCHS. At the reunion he apologized to me for not being as good of a coach that first year, as he should have been. His subsequent success down thru the years told me that he took lessons learned and put them into action. It took 50 years, but your husband's
apology made me a better person that night, because of his obvious sincerity. I have no doubt that he had an enduring positive impact on every young man he coached.

May Jesus bind up your broken heart, may He walk beside you through this time of grief and sorrow, may He be a source of comfort.

Respectfully
John D. Smith

Peggy.... hard for me to accept this.....as you know, Ben and I were not intimately close on a regular basis, but we had a special affinity with many shared experiences. I greatly regret we did not make more effort to stay closer. The thread of our friendship continued over the years and I was proud of it!

Ben had reason to take great pride in his professional success and his dedicated community service! I am sure you share it and I wish only the best memories for you.

We will see you next Thursday and Friday...and am thinking about you and Ben every day.

Ben was a very much loved nephew and we will miss him greatly. We cherish his younger years which allowed us to be more of a part of his life. The later years, because of living away from Kansas, we didn't see much of each other, but the times when we could travel, going through Junction City and spending time with Ben and Peggy has special memories. We remember fondly the summer he came to McPherson to live with us while he worked at the refinery between college terms. Our hearts go out to Peggy in his untimely death, and are so glad they came to visit us in September this year. We pray for the peace of Jesus to surround her and the rest of the family with His comfort.
